Backflow Prevention & Testing Requirements

Annual Backflow Preventer Inspections: Protecting Our Water Supply

To help keep our community’s drinking water safe, annual inspections of backflow prevention devices are required for certain properties and water uses. Backflow preventers are critical safety devices that stop contaminated water from flowing backward into the public water system.

Who needs a backflow preventer?
Backflow prevention devices are typically required for any connection where there is a potential for contamination. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Irrigation or outdoor sprinkler/watering systems
  • Hot water based (hydronic) heating system
  • Pool, hotub, or pond
  • Hose bibs older than 1991 or not anti-siphon hose bibs
  • Fire sprinkler system
  • Well or other auxiliary water source

Why are annual inspections required?
Over time, backflow preventers can wear down or fail. Annual testing by a certified tester ensures your device is working properly and continues to protect the public water supply from contamination.

What do you need to do?
If your property is required to have a backflow prevention device:

  • Schedule an annual inspection with a certified backflow tester
  • Submit test results to the Water District by the required deadline (annually by 12/15)
  • If you have not had one in the past 12 months, please schedule ASAP
    • The testers most used by residents of the district:
      • D. Hammack at 503.738.8966
      • Cindy Olson at 503.440.0440

·       Make any necessary repairs if your device does not pass inspection and reschedule another inspection

Failure to comply may result in follow-up notices or potential interruption of water service, as required by state regulations.
